The Folly of Worry in Light of Our Future

Tuesday, November 20, 2012
by John MacArthur
Much of our anxiety is born out of concerns and uncertainty regarding our future. We get caught up in our plans and programs, overlooking the blessings of today and obsessing over uncontrollable details on the horizon.
Jesus said, “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew6:34). In effect He was saying, “Don’t worry about the future. Even though it will have its share of problems, worrying about those problems now doesn’t accomplish anything. Just deal with them as they come, for there’s no way to solve them in advance.”
Planning and providing for tomorrow is good, but worrying about it is sin because God is the God of tomorrow just as He is the God of today. Your anxiety about the future is really doubt in the Lord’s sovereign control.Lamentations 3:23 tells us His mercies “are new every morning.” Put your confidence in the Lord’s daily grace and provision and you’ll be less prone to panic about an uncertain future.
Worry paralyzes its victim, making him or her too upset to accomplish anything else. It hijacks your focus and forces you mentally into tomorrow, occupying your mind with doubts about details you cannot control. The Lord says you have enough to deal with today. Apply today’s resources to today’s needs or you will lose today’s joy.
Lack of joy is a sin for God’s people. By worrying about tomorrow, many believers miss the victory God would give them today. That’s not fair to Him. “This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24, emphasis added). God gives you the glorious gift of life today; live in the light and full joy of that day, using the resources He supplies. Don’t push yourself into the future and forfeit the day’s joy over some tomorrow that may never happen. Today is all you really have, for God permits none of us to live in tomorrow until it turns into today. Jay Adams, who has written excellent materials on counseling those who struggle with anxiety and other sins, adds this:
Tomorrow always belongs to God. . . . Whenever we try to take hold of it, we try to steal what belongs to Him. Sinners want what is not theirs to have, and thereby destroy themselves. God has given us only today. He strongly forbids us to become concerned about what might happen. . . . Worriers not only want what has been forbidden, but also fail to use what has been given to them (What Do You Do When You Worry All the Time? pamphlet [Philipsburg, NJ: P & R, 1975]).
Realize God gives you strength one day at a time. He gives you what you need, when you need it. He doesn’t encumber you with excess baggage.
Perhaps your worst fear is how you’d handle a loved one’s death. Let me assure you as a pastor who has kept watch over many Christians finding themselves in that situation, this is the attitude I most often encounter: “It is so wonderful how God has sustained me! I naturally miss my beloved, but I feel such incredible strength and confidence and a gladness in my heart that my loved one is with the Lord.” God gives us His grace in the hour we need it. If we worry about the future now, we double our pain without having the grace to deal with it.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). That means He will be doing the same thing tomorrow that He was doing yesterday. If you have any question about the future, look at the past. Did He sustain you then? He will sustain you in the future.

Yesterday's Sunday trail ride was great. It was the first time my teeneged daughter joined us and she did really well compared to my first ride. I had such a hard time with the climbs. Those grueling concrete paved uphills and rocky climbs were bloody for me last year ....However she's 16 and I was 40 when I did my first! We had a really late rideout at 11 am at about past 12pm at almost 1 pm we had our lunch at giant's with the usual favorites of pancit, spam and red egg salad :)

January has been great so far. New prospects, better rides , great times. Was in Mercato Friday night and had a bit too much mochiko so I need to burn today in Maarat.

I'm still hoping il be able to bike more...But my hubby just won't let me bike in the city Alone with this vintage.

He said there are way too many waywards on the streets and I could get mugged. I was planning on a bike to work mode with a few stuff anyway. No laptops or anything. And my main purpose is to get some sweat everyday. Blah! He won't let me! Sooooooon! I shall do it!

Mean Girls
Lynn Cowell

"But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips." Colossians 3:8 (NIV)

Standing in line for the concert gave my family plenty of people-watching time. As girls and guys made their way to the back of the line, I pointed out all the immodest clothing. "Why would she wear those in public?" "Oh my! I can't believe she feels comfortable dressed like that!" I commented as one-by-one they passed us.

I must have shared quite a few of these statements because my oldest teenaged daughter finally said, "Mom, you are being mean!"

I felt so small. I hadn't thought I was being mean. I was simply pointing out to my girls how not to dress. But my daughter was right.

The truth is, my girls already know how not to dress; I have been teaching them since they were five. And now I was teaching them how to judge another woman. I was teaching them to be mean.

Since that night at the concert I've come to the conclusion that mean girls often come from mean mamas. When we point out other's flaws, we are modeling for our kids a judgmental heart. Instead, what we mamas need to demonstrate is compassion.

Our key verse today says we are to rid ourselves of slander, which means a scandalous remark. In fact, in the verses before and the verses that follow, it doesn't mention of any time when it is okay to slander others.

One way we are overcoming a mean spirit in our family is through accountability. When my girls are gossiping or putting another girl down, I gently point it out and my girls do the same for me.

At first, having my child call me out was a bit uncomfortable. But making this a family issue, rather than just me correcting my kids, is bringing us to a deeper level of kindness.

Like me, you may be surprised to discover just how often you say unkind things . If you watch each other's words, both you and your child will become more compassionate, less judgmental and a whole lot more careful about the words you say! It's working for me; I know it will work for you too!

Dear Lord, I want to rid myself of slander and in turn teach my children to do the same. Please cleanse my heart of judgment and help me to set a guard over my mouth. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

new year new plans

Whether this new year succeeds in changing my oh so blah complaining attitude ... I will be in prayer. I have tendencies to slow down and feel old. I don't want that anymore!
